About Us
September 2007 marked the beginning of the Arizona Leafy Green Products Shipper Marketing Agreement (AZ LGMA). Members of the AZ LGMA are working collaboratively to protect public health by reducing potential sources of contamination in Arizona grown leafy greens.
While cattle, citrus, cotton, copper, and climate have represented Arizona’s economic base for decades and are widely recognized with the alliteration of the “five C’s” easily rolling off the tongue, the little-known lettuce industry has quietly grown into one of Arizona’s most vital agricultural sectors, bringing an estimated $1 billion to the state in the way of jobs and revenues.
If you live in the United States or Canada during the months of November through March, chances are good that the lettuce you consume is cultivated in Arizona.
In an effort to better organize and protect the integrity of leafy green vegetables grown and shipped from the state, those who are directly involved in Arizona’s leafy greens industry established the Arizona Leafy Greens Food Safety Committee (Arizona Leafy Greens) in 2007. The members of this group ensure that Arizona’s leafy greens meet mandatory food safety standards upheld with audits conducted by government-certified inspectors.
