What do you grow on your farm?
You name it! I grow it! Escarole, spring mix, cabbage, romaine, butter lettuce, arugula, iceberg lettuce, green leaf lettuce, red leaf lettuce, baby leaf lettuce, spinach, kale, and chard.
What is your family’s favorite Leafy Greens vegetable?
It’s hard for me to pick a favorite leafy green vegetable – kind of like choosing a favorite child. We used to have a love affair with iceberg, but our tastes have definitely evolved over the years. My children, all grown adults, tend to branch out more with foods in general. They love all kinds of leafy greens, and they’re probably a whole lot healthier.
What is the biggest challenge you face every day?
One of my biggest concerns is ensuring the produce we grow is safe from all of the naturally occurring elements that can cause a problem. We do everything we can do to keep produce healthy and safe, but Mother Nature is sometimes unpredictable, and challenges can change every day. The thing we strive to do is always be ready to meet the day head on and be ready to address whatever challenge comes along.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Nothing brings me greater pleasure to see a beautiful crop grow, get harvested and shipped off for people across the nation to enjoy. I love the people I work with, and the diversity. Farming is a very satisfying and social business. There’s also a certain level of passion that we all share. Passion for what we do, and for most of us, it’s a lifelong passion.
