Meet the Farmer - Blake Harrison Harrison Farms

What do you grow on your farm?

We are very fortunate to be able to farm year-round in Yuma. For us that means growing lettuce, romaine, broccoli, cauliflower, celery and a few other produce commodities in the winter and cotton, wheat, and corn silage in the summer. Harrison Farms also grows a variety of year-round crops such as dates, citrus, Bermuda grass, and alfalfa. We can grow just about anything suited for our climate and grow both organic and conventional crops.

What is your family’s favorite Leafy Green vegetable?

I have four small children at home and sometimes it is a challenge to get them to eat anything at all, but my wife sure likes when I bring home romaine. There’s nothing like a crisp romaine salad to go with dinner.

What is the biggest challenge you face every day?

Farming involves a lot of moving parts. When you farm a variety of crops in different locations it can be a challenge to keep up with everything. Every field and crop is different and you have to get to know each one to ensure they are safe to eat and productive. Not to mention keeping equipment running, people working, water schedules straight, and the general tasks of running a business.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Farming isn’t just a job to me, it is a way of life. There is nothing more rewarding than growing a crop knowing it will be served to families like mine, and doing it with hard working people and family by your side.
