Meet the Farmer - John Boelts, Desert Premium Farms

What do you grow on your farm?

We proudly grow the highest quality fresh romaine, head and leaf lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli, cilantro and melons, as well as durum wheat, cotton, alfalfa, sorghum and seed crops.

What is your family’s favorite Leafy Green vegetable?

We love all of the crops we grow, but my favorite is romaine lettuce prepared as a caesar salad. It’s tough to beat the taste, and good for us to eat!

What is the biggest challenge you face every day?

Having enough skilled hands to work with us on our farm to carefully grow and harvest our healthful crop has been our biggest challenge for more than two decades. It also is vital that we continually focus on food safety and making sure everyone who works with us understands our commitment to growing and providing safe and healthy food. Farmers have relied on hard working, skilled first and second generation immigrants to come to the U.S. and tend/harvest labor intensive crops like fresh vegetables for generations. If farmers don’t have workers available, and the farm workers don’t have the opportunity to come here and help grow and safely harvest our food here, we will lose the ability to grow our food in the U.S. and will have to import these foods.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

It always brings a smile to my face knowing that the fresh produce and other crops we grow are a healthy and important part of peoples lives, all across the US, Canada and around the globe! Being a farmer is humbling and rewarding privilege.
